Embrace Your Inner Idiot

In this time of increased patriotism, there has been a revival of all of the patriotic songs that celebrate America and the freedom that we enjoy as American citizens.  Of course, given the events of Sept. 11th, a renewed sense of patriotism and displays of such, in this case in the form of music, is appropriate and helps us all come together as a nation and as a people.  This being said, can I make a simple request - Can someone create and perform a patriotic song that I can stand to hear!?

This request has been brewing as I have been exposed to numerous versions of "God Bless America", "America the Beautiful", and "The Star Spangled Banner" at sporting events, on the television, and on the radio recently.  Most versions are neither exciting nor disappointing, musically speaking - rather lacking of musical spice.  A few, a very few, are genuinely enjoyable renditions of these old songs, an example being Ray Charles’ version of "America the Beautiful".  Then, of course, there is that dreadful song, in my opinion, "Proud to be an American" by Lee Greenwood.  The message is a good one, but the way it is delivered makes me want to jump on a steak knife.

Here is my idea.  Let’s pick some of the more popular groups in each music genre to compose a patriotic song or do a cover of some of the old, traditional songs.  That way, we can all enjoy the patriotic message without having to sacrifice our musical tastes.  Here are a few ideas of the groups to approach for this idea:

  • Punk - The Offspring or Blink 182

  • Pop - Madonna

  • Hard Rock - Rob Zombie

  • Blues - Keep Ray Charles’ version here

  • Country - Garth Brooks

  • Rap - beats me.  I’d make a suggestion here but, since I don’t listen to this music much, I’m sure it would be a lame choice.

Some people may find this suggestion offensive as it violates the tradition of these songs.  I say, "screw that!"  America’s biggest strength is the opportunity for all individuals to express themselves as they like without being bound by other people’s ideas or guidelines.  As such, we should be able to display our patriotism using whatever musical style we like best.  One exception, I absolutely forbid anyone within earshot of me to play that damn Lee Greenwood song...

Idiot Sighting:  Television News Personnel, especially those covering the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11th and the current war effort.  When you don’t know anything new and are out of facts to discuss, SHUT UP!  No one cares about your opinions on the subject.  Just the facts, ma’am.

This will be a feature attached to every article "honoring" that individual or individuals whose "Idiot" has escaped and displayed itself to the public.  Feel free to nominate people for this award, as I’m sure that I don’t witness all displays of idiocy on show around the world at any given time.

Until next time, The Idiot
